A
great Club Racer that puts you up against with the big boys,
inviting many stories for the post match function, exhilarating
to sail, a fun project to build.
Designed as a fun trailed club racer that is cheap and easy
to build. The Thompson T650 is designed to have sailing
characteristics like its big brother the Thompson 8 Meter,
powerful upwind and reaching performance with large asymmetric
spinnakers to take it down wind at speed. Low wetted surface
and a high ballast ratio makes sure this design is capable
of winning races in all wind and sea conditions.
Rigged with a double swept spreader decked stepped carbon
fibre mast, running backstays or topmast stays are not required.
The boom is a rolled aluminium tube and the retractable
prod is made from carbon fibre.
Sails are designed to cater for all wind ranges and angles
with one mainsail, three jibs and two asymmetric spinnakers.
Deck gear is kept simple with a central winch slotted in
the keel lifting tubes adjacent to the centercase used for
gennaker sheet control. The jib sheets are handled on a
2:1 purchase, halyards are hand tightened but can lead to
the central winch if required. All other gear is dinghy
style for lightness, strength and simplicity.
Performance to date has been outstanding with wins in all
divisional racing and the NZ National trailer sailer championship
under it's belt both on line and handicap. The boat has
proven a great performer in all conditions leaving much
larger and more sophisticated yachts in it's wake.

Design
The T650 is designed as a development design with the added
advantage of being capable of amateur construction.
The designers have utilises the latest VPP software to help
create a boat that is very fast and stable upwind yet exhilarating
downwind.
It features wide and comfortable side decks and a large
cockpit, all of the sailing controls are simple and easy
to use.
The rig features no permanent backstay with rig tension
adjusted from an optional hydraulic ram under the mast.
The mast is designed with the mainsail roach to bend in
the puffs and allow the mainsail to exhaust.
Construction
The T650 is constructed using eglass and epoxy resin with
a foam core. Carbon fiber is used for additional stiffening
where appropriate.
A cedar stripped plank building method is available but
with our simple to build methods in foam it is not recommended.
Plywood internals are used with a simple grid system of
foam ringframes.
The keel and rudder are constructed using carbon fiber stiffening.
Specification
Rig The mast is carbon fiber with an aluminium
option for the budget conscious. Rigging is Dyform with
aluminium spreaders and boom.
The bow pod is articulating and carbon fiber.
Deck Fitout Full Harken or Ronstan fitout
with winch option.
Sails Mainsail, light and medium jib with
a heavy air option.
Spinnakers are asymmetric with one masthead and one fractional.
Trailer and launching The boat can be trailer
launched using the custom keel winch or dry sailed with
the central lifting hook. |
